Badgerland Council News

News from the National Conference

Badgerland Council joined Girl Scouts from across the world to gather at the National Conference in Houston, Texas last week. Thirty two volunteers, staff and delegates from the council attended workshops, listened to key note speakers, and connected with Girl Scouts from across the globe.

The Girl Scout Leadership Institute

GSLI was held in concert with the National Conference and began on November 10. The theme was Leadership and Innovation…the Next 100 Years. Some of the things attendees learned about included global innovation, biomedical research, robotics, and marketing.

The National Council Session

The National Council Session is the Girl Scouts’ major governance meeting and occurs every three years. Badgerland Council had eight delegates, each council  has elected delegates who represent themand have voting privileges at all business meetings. Delegates must be Girl Scout members over 14 years old. This is an important role at the convention. Delegate’s elect the officers, members at large, and National Board Development Committee members; provide input on Girl Scouts policy issues; and vote on proposals. Badgerland Council Girl Scouts had the opportunity to learn about the democratic process through this participation and have a voice in the policies that will carry us into the next century.

Young Women of Distinction

The top 10 Gold Award winners in the nation gathered to share their stories and their projects. Each young woman had an inspirational project that truly did help change the world. Meet the Gold Award winners by clicking here.

Badgerland Council Receives $10,000 Award

Badgerland Council is proud to announce the receipt of a $10,000 grant through the BP Fueling Communities Program. Fueling Communities provides grants to local organizations that are nominated by BP’s branded marketers to support the communities in which they do business. The Girl Scouts of Wisconsin-Badgerland Council’s grant donation will be applied toward the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. This will help fund hands-on educational programs for more than 14,000 girls in arts, science and technology, financial literacy and fitness.

We appreciate the efforts of Girl Scout leader Rhonda Warner, who nominated the council for the BP grant. Warner, a co-leader of two troops in Sullivan, Wisconsin, recognized the need to fund programs that develop girls into future business and community leaders. As an employee of a BP distributor she nominated Badgerland Council to be a recipient of the grant program. When discussing the program Warner explained that a focus of the program is to fund youth organizations and education. She exclaimed, “It was a natural fit!” She went on to say that Girl Scouts “offers opportunities for girls to expand their horizons. It also helps girls build their confidence by trying new things that may be scary at first...like rock wall climbing.”

Did You Know?

Timezones Developed by Railroads

At exactly noon on November 18, 1883, American and Canadian railroads established four continental time zones to end the confusion of dealing with thousands of local times. This move underscored the power of the railroad companies at that time. Before the use of time zones, travel time between cities was based on when the sun was at its highest point (or “high noon”) at the local destination. Local times varied drastically and became a scheduling nightmare for the railroads. Developing the standard of continental time zones helped alleviate scheduling confusion for the railroads; however, it was not until 1918 that congress officially adopted railroad time zones.  (Source: History.com)
