The Value of the Girl Scout Cookie Sale

We have dominated our market. We’ve nailed brand loyalty. Our sales force is disciplined and aggressive.

We’re the Girl Scouts, and after 100 years, we’re finally getting recognized for our financial prowess—with 13 new badges rewarding money smarts.

Badges are a big deal, as any scout will tell you—a testament to hard-won skills. And giving nearly 3 million girls the opportunity to be rewarded for financial savvy is both a breakthrough and a sign of the times.

Case in point: The Boy Scouts offer only one money-related badge.

The Girl Scouts’ program is unique because of the group dynamic, says Suzanne Harper, Senior Director of Program Resources for GSUSA.

“It helps girls to learn about money in an all-girl environment. They feel safer.” That’s partly because there’s no social pressure to look dumb in front of the boys.

Younger girls earn badges for things like putting together an outfit for under $30, while older girls earn a “Financing My Future” badge by researching how their dream career will (or won’t) pay for their dream lives.

Now that the geniuses behind Thin Mints are helping young girls master their money, bake sales are only the beginning.

World Thinking Day 2012: February 22

Each year on February 22, World Thinking Day, girls participate in activities and projects with global themes to honor their sister Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in other countries.  Many Girl Scouts of Wisconsin – Badgerland Council membership areas hold special community events during this time to explore other counties and cultures, and sometimes to raise funds for the Juliette Gordon Low World Friendship Fund.

World Thinking Day not only gives girls a chance to celebrate international friendships, but is also a reminder that Girl Scouts of the USA is part of a global community—one of nearly 150 countries with Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. World Thinking Day is part of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts Global Action Theme (GAT) based on the United Nation's Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which aim to improve the lives of the world's poorest people. The theme for World Thinking Day 2012 is girls worldwide say "we can save our planet." This theme is based on United Nation's Millennium Development Goal 7 focused on environmental sustainability. The World Thinking Day award activities are designed to complement the Girl Scout Leadership Journeys and reinforce the Girl Scout Leadership Experience.

The World Thinking Day award is now an OFFICIAL Award; therefore it may be worn on the front of the Official Uniform sash or vest.  To find out more about earning World Thinking Day awards *click here.  The Badgerland Council Shops carry the World Thinking Day awards, to order yours contact your local council shop at:

POWER UP↑

Doing Nothing? Not an option.

Every 7 minutes a child is bullied.  Every day 160,000 kids miss school due to bullying.

85% of bullying episodes happen in front of bystanders.  Aggression and abuse rises with each                     additional audience member.

Adults intervene in only 4% of bullying incidents on the playground and only 14% of bullying incidents in         the classroom

Power Up is a bullying prevention program for girls.  We know that relational bullying, spreading rumors, gossiping, isolating, intimidation and exclusion, is now more common than ever.  This type of bullying occurs among girls who seem to be friends, and can be so subtle, adults may not even realize it’s happening.  Power Up encourages the 85% of the population who are bystanders to bullying (rather than targets or bullies) to recognize the strength in those numbers and use it to intervene when they see something wrong.  An all-girl program, Power Up is for girls in grades 3rd-5th grades and focuses on preventing this unique type of relational bullying.

Power Up utilizes informal education, experiential learning and processing to teach bullying prevention.  During Power Up sessions, facilitators use fun, high energy activities to empower girls with tools and ways of dealing with bullying behavior they witness in a positive, thoughtful way.

You can become a trained Power Up facilitator and bring this bullying prevention program to your troop and other girls in your area.
